Our Beautiful Setting

Owlets and Little Owls

Our Owlets are our one year old children, they share space with our Little Owls (who are aged two and three) with the flexibility of their own room when required (such as lunchtimes, nap times or during sensory play). The rooms and garden have been designed to evolve easily in order to meet the emerging needs of all of the children in this phase with the prime areas at the forefront. It is during their

time as Owlets and Little Owls that children establish positive relationships with others and their key workers, learn about the routines of the nursery day and explore the environment with increasing independence. At times, Owlets will also explore the wider nursery setting and large nursery garden with support of their key workers.

Our Owlets room has direct access to our smaller garden. Children explore our larger nursery garden in small groups with their key workers and will also take trips to the local conservation and recreation group where appropriate.

Our Owlets Room is zoned into the following areas:

  • Small World and Awe and Wonder

  • Cosy Corner

  • Role Play

  • Message Station and Creative

  • Playdough

  • Snack

Children are encouraged to be as independent as possible in their use of the environment and when accessing resources. Key workers use observation to determine the appropriate levels of independence for, for example, self-serve snack.

Fledglings

When our children are within their final year before starting school, they become fledglings. Transition takes the form of regular stay and play sessions within the for new starters and Little Owls as well as the opportunity to join the older children for story time before lunchtime. We take transition on an individual basis - with some children being ready to move sooner and others needing a little more time before moving up. Regardless of when children transition formally, we plan plenty of opportunities for all children to mix together throughout their nursery week.

Our Fledglings have access to the following areas:

  • Message Station and Creative

  • Small World and Awe and Wonder

  • Cosy Corner

  • Role Play

  • Snack

  • Playdough

  • Physical

The areas are set up in the same position each day so that children know and understand where everything is. Shelving is carefully laid out with equipment and resources that are visible and easy to access. We encourage children to transport items between areas when immersed in play and encourage children to return items to where they belong when they have finished playing with them. Areas are zoned to prevent children from walking between carpet areas; this means that

children can build and organise resources without fear of them being knocked over. Art equipment, playdough and snack are self-serve. Our practitioners spend time with little ones supporting them to pour out and measure qualities and to clean up after themselves.

Our video setting tours will give you a flavour of our setting but we always encourage parents to come and visit the setting where possible to get a feel for it when it is open.
